Now that his 10-year run of lawyering in the Navy has ended, "JAG" alum DAVID JAMES ELLIOTT heads to the beach -- but not for well-deserved R&R -- but rather for 140 miles of blood, sweat and maybe even some tears as he gears up to take part in the famously grueling Ironman Triathlon!
"I find that it works its way into real life and you set these goals and complete them," he says about doing the famous race. "It translates into life really well and other challenges that you take up. It's also a great way to stay in shape!"
The hunky actor is at the height of his training for the October 15 competition in Hawaii, which consists of a 112-mile bike race, a 26.2-mile run and a 2.4-mile swim in the ocean -- with just a mere 17 hours to finish!
"The Ironman distance is crazy," he admits, "But where do you go after you've run 15 marathons and have done a bunch of century rides? Now it's time to put them all together."
David, an avid runner, says that it will be the running, swimming and biking combo that will be the real challenge. "Singly, none of the disciplines scare me," he reveals. "It's when you put them together. The run at the end is probably going to be misery. So I'm looking forward to that -- a little misery!"
The 1,800 competitors, anywhere from 18 to 80-years-old and from more than 50 countries, spend up to 24 hours of training a week, which can include a whopping 225 miles of biking, 48 miles of running and seven miles of swimming -- well worth the $580,000 prize the athletes are vying for.
But David doesn't expect to take home top honors. "If we did 15 (hours) we'd be pretty happy with that," he says. "We're in no danger of winning ... we just want to finish. That's good enough for me."
On a lighter -- and less tiring note -- fun facts about the race include: 200,000 cups, 30,000 bike bottles, 600 bottles of sunscreen and 4,000 visors are used; the temperature during the race is usually between 82-95 degrees Fahrenheit; 5,500 volunteers line the course; and more than 50 million people worldwide watch the intense event.
